  23. Welcome to the BACKUP and RESTORE programs that will make your PC Hack or
  24. NetHack characters IMMORTAL!  The idea behind these programs is quite simple:
  25. when you save a game, Hack creates an .SAV file in your characters name. The
  26. BACKUP program copies this .SAV file to a .BAK file for safekeeping. When you
  27. play again as your saved character, Hack uses this .SAV file. If (when) you
  28. die, Hack DELETES this .SAV file (very nasty). BUT, because you used BACKUP,
  29. you still have the .BAK file of your character! Just run RESTORE and WHAM!!,
  30. you're character's resurrected just as you remember.....

  37. INSTALLING these programs
  38. -------------------------
  39.  
  40. Copy both executable files (BACKUP.EXE and RESTORE.EXE) to the subdirectory
  41. which contains your Hack or NetHack SAVED GAMES. If you're running Hack from a
  42. floppy disk, copy them to your data disk. The defaults for the games are as
  43. follows:
  44.  
  45.     HACK running from floppy disk.............DATA DISK in drive B:
  46.     HACK running from a hard drive............C:\GAMES\HACK
  47.     NETHACK...................................C:\GAMES\NETHACK\BONES
  48.  
  49. If you have any doubt as to where your saved games go, try to save a game and
  50. then take a directory of your Hack subndirectory (or Data Disk). You should
  51. find a file that has the same name as your character, but with an .SAV
  52. extension.
  53.  
  54. USING these programs
  55. --------------------
  56.  
  57. After you've copied both BACKUP.EXE and RESTORE.EXE to the proper directory,
  58. play a game and save it (by using the "Q" command). In this example, we'll use
  59. my character's name "Mockingull". Then, follow these steps:
  60.  
  61.     1. At the DOS prompt, enter the command:
  62.  
  63.             BACKUP MOCKINGULL           then press the ENTER key.
  64.  
  65.        Of course, if your character's name is different from Mockingull, use
  66.        it in place of Mockingull in the command.
  67.  
  68.     2. Resume your saved game by starting Hack and using the same character
  69.        name. Play a little - have fun, play until you die....
  70.  
  71.     3. When you die and the game ends, enter the following command at the DOS
  72.        prompt:

  74.             RESTORE MOCKINGULL          then press the ENTER key.
  75.  
  76.        Of course, if your character's name is different from Mockingull, use
  77.        it in place of Mockingull in the command.

  79.     4. Go ahead and play another game using your reincarnated character!

  84. SPECIAL NOTES for these progams
  85. -------------------------------

  87.   - The sad fact of the matter is that there are viri, "hacked" programs, etc.
  88.     of ALL sorts out there...for those of you who are concerned, McAfee's
  89.     VALIDATE v0.4 will return the following codes:
  90.

  98.     If the versions YOU have return DIFFERENT authentication checks, how have
  99.     a HACKED, possibly INFECTED version of these programs! DELETE them and
  100.     contact the person/BBS you received them from and let them know! You may
  101.     contact me directly for a list of the boards that carry the most current
  102.     version.

  104.   - Save your game often! Then run BACKUP on it....your RESTORE'd character is
  105.     only as good as the last time you backed it up!
  106.  
  107.   - If you've already backed up your character, BACKUP will tell you and old
  108.     backup copy already exists and ask you if you want to overwrite it. If you
  109.     do, you will loose the older backup of your character and it will be
  110.     replaced by the newer backup.
  111.  
  112.   - If you try to BACKUP an identical saved game, the program will tell you
  113.     the saved game has already been backed up.
  114.  
  115.   - If you try to RESTORE an already saved or restored game, the program will
  116.     tell you and ask for confirmation (in some cases, it won't let you do it!
  117.     You'll have to kill off your character, or delete the .SAV file, before
  118.     attempting to RESTORE).

  120.   - Basically, I've tried to make these programs as "accident-proof" as
  121.     possible (within reason). Go ahead and try them - I'll let you know if
  122.     something's about to go wrong...
